Round Its Gilt Cage
”Taught from infancy that beauty is woman's sceptre, the mind shapes itself to the body, and roaming round its gilt cage, only seeks to adorn its prison.” Mary Wollstonecraft
“Round its gilt cage” is a mixed media project which explores the current threat to women’s autonomy through the study of a narrative of one of the most pioneering advocates of women’s rights, equality and education: Mary Wollstonecraft. By employing painting, video and performance, the project attempts to time travel and construct a bridge between contemporary political assault on women’s lives and historical oppression.
